USDA-Inspected Meat Processing Plants

4071 meat processing facilities across the United States hold an active USDA grant of inspection for meat, poultry, or both.

The largest inspected capacity is in California (419), New York (262), Texas (255).

A federal grant of inspection means the facility slaughters and processes under USDA inspection, with federal inspectors verifying that meat and poultry are handled under the Federal Meat Inspection Act and the Poultry Products Inspection Act. Products from these plants carry the USDA mark of inspection and can be sold commercially, including across state lines.

USDA inspection and the custom exemption are not mutually exclusive: many inspected plants also hold a custom exemption and set aside capacity for owner-supplied animals alongside their inspected production.
